Computer Network Support Services
29th January 2016Computer networks are an everyday feature in most people’s lives. Businesses, in particular, rely on a computer network to share information between their employees, but having a good support service for computer network breakdowns and maintenance is essential to keep your information safeguarded.
What is a computer network?
In layman’s terms, a computer network is a form of telecommunications that allows computers to exchange information. Computers are connected by network links using either cables or wireless media. The internet is the best known and largest computer network, but even simple connections, such as using a printer, relies on a computer network.
Network Installation
Installing a computer network requires consideration of the size and requirements of the network, and the physical layout and topology of nodes (connection points that redistribute information) need to be planned carefully to ensure the system functions correctly. Networks can be linked through either wired or wireless technologies.
Wired technologies:
- Coaxial cable: used for local area networks, such as cable television and within offices and worksites. Cables are insulated to minimise interference and transmission speeds range from between 200 million bits per second to more than 500 million bits per second. ITU-T G.hn technology can optimise coaxial cable connections to create a high-speed network
- Twisted-pair cabling: A widely used medium for telephone wires and ethernet connections
Wireless technologies:
- Terrestrial microwave: this communication relies on transmitters and receiving satellite dishes across the world
- Communication satellites: satellites in space capable of receiving voice, data and TV signals through microwave radio waves
- Cellular and PCS systems: a system that divides a region into multiple locations with lower power transmitters or antennas to relay calls from one area to the next
Networks also require some basic systems such as:
- Network interface controllers: computer hardware that allows the computer to access and process the network information
- Repeaters and hubs: devices used to clean up the network signal for a better connection
- Bridges: filters traffic between network links
- Switches: connects devices on a network together by forwarding data to the destination device
- Modems: converts data from analog waves to digital information
- Firewalls: controls network security and prevents cyber attacks
Support and maintenance of the network
Networks can appear very complex to those without in-depth knowledge of computer systems, and if a fault was to occur it can be very difficult to address the problem. It is for this reason that users of a network should use a professional computer network support service to install and maintain the system, and ensure that the security of the network users is upheld.
Network security
Network security is needed to protect against those attempting to gain unauthorised access. The use of passwords and IDs to access the network is the first steps you should take to safeguard your transactions and communications, but for a more in-depth security measure you should encrypt your data so that potential hackers will be unable to access confidential information.

What is IP access control?
IP access control is a security device that is usually either installed into the computer or operated via a browser to control entry to protected areas of a network and minimise the risk of data leaks. It is a reliable and affordable system that can dramatically increase your network security.
